Comic #33 – The Time

I actually have a Thing watch, but I’ve never actually worn it on a date…. for this reason.

  1. Ryan Fox

How does he keep getting dates with the same girl? She must be very patient.

  2. stupidinventor

    Ha!
It’s actually a different girl every time, I just suck at drawing girls… :)

Also, it could be that I see women as one single entity that has no interest in going on a second date with me… :(

    Thanks for the comment!

  3. Eli

Have you met Bad 4 Shidduchim?
    http://badforshidduchim.wordpress.com/

  4. berickcook

I have got to find a way to get a hold of that movie XD

  5. Ryan Fox

Oh, I guess you’re right. The first two girls looked somewhat similar, so I assumed they were the same. Then this girl appeared sufficiently long enough after that for me to have forgotten what the other two looked like.

  6. stupidinventor

@Eli Thanks for the tip! What a fun blog!

@berickcook have you heard of the movie before? basically the movie was made for legal reasons and the producers never intended to actually release the movie to the outside world, but the cast and crew had no idea! I downloaded a bootleg copy, and you can find bootleg dvds on ebay and probably in your local comic book shop! read more about the movie here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Fantastic_Four_%28film%29

@Ryan Fox Yeah I try to spread my “Blind Date” comics far from each other because I can’t draw girls, but rest assured the Stupid Inventor won’t be getting a second date from anyone in the foreseeable future… :)

  7. ClockworkZero

hehehe… i suspect I am one of the few geek girls that might actually appreciate the watch! Sad, but true. If i wore it to my old job (place-that-was-once-uunet) I know I would have had the boys eating out of my hand.
not that that might be a good thing. ;)
    regards
    clockworkzero

  8. berickcook

I had heard of it, but forgot about it’s existence. So, thanks for the reminder! The story behind it is pretty sad. I feel bad for all those people that put so much effort into something that few will ever see. Now that it has aged, I’m surprised they don’t release an official version! It would instantly have a b-movie cult following.

@ClockworkZero I agree. I’m sure there are lots of awesome geek girls who would appreciate the watch, and it’s funny how ga-ga we geeks go over girls who aren’t afraid to flaunt their geekiness!

  9. stupidinventor

@ClockworkZero actually, there seems to be a drought of geeks in my neighborhood. When I first got the watch I wore it almost every day and replied “It’s Clobberin’ Time” whenever someone asked me the time…. I had to stop because nobody laughed and I started getting looks…
Ha, I also have a Binary watch… that would definitely be geek guy catnip if you want to borrow it, lol ;)

I have a The Thing action figure that I used to keep on my desk at work but people kept putting him in different poses…

@berickcook Exactly! I love B-Movies that have that visible passion despite the fact that the movie itself is terrible, you know? When you watch the Fantastic Four movie, you see it’s bad, but you know the people are really trying and it gives it a certain charm…. I think this version is better than the more recent one and if I ever had the power, I would definitely release it onto dvd. along with a documentary with the cast and crew, thats sure to be interesting!

I think the reason geek guys go gaga for a geeky girls is because for a Jock, approaching a girl and getting rejected isnt a big deal, he can always just try the next one… but geeky girls are so rare (in my experience, they could be hiding from me…) that the geek goes crazy since he knows this is his one-in-a-million chance… :)

  10. ClockworkZero

@berickcook – I worked for a ReallyBig backbone provider in Canada for almost 9 yrs – the company-that-once-was-UUNet – and there were so few women in the company in the support/tech department. Only one unix admin grrl! I think there were about 4 out of 16 or so – but our numbers fluctuated over the years. When I started I was THRILLED to find so many guys who watched the same movies, read the same books, collected comics etc etc. My previous tech support job was with a small company but there were a lot more geek girls. (50+%). It was the guys who finally encouraged me to get into making steampunk jewelry – but I don’t think any of us figured it would eventually lead me away from the company. (that and the outsourcing!)

@stupidinventor – oh i know the binary watches! I hate to admit it always takes me a minute longer to figure out the time. lol. One of the guys had one (& binary t-shirts etc).

I also have a bunch of action figures – sometimes when I’d get to my desk they’d be posed in crazy arrangements. ummm… threesomes… usually involving the Aliens doing impossible naughty tricks… Ah… the 4am night shift games. Gotta do something between outtages.

gee, can’t wait for the next post here!

  11. stupidinventor

@ClockworkZero Yeah it takes me longer to read too, but you get used to it after a while, I’ve been wearing an old school wind-up skeleton watch lately… I love being able to see the watch’s inner workings! (Like your Etsy stuff btw, I have a pair of watch insides cuff-links that I got from Etsy a while back…) I actually have a comic about binary shirts, haven’t drawn it yet though…

My desk at home is filled with action figure, (People wonder how I get any work done…)
Ha! I actually took that concept a step further with this picture, have you seen it: http://www.stupidinventor.com/2009/12/13/proud-parents/

New comic at midnight EST, and I think next week I’m going to do another 6-part storyline (I’m going to try and post one once a month).. It’s such a nice feeling to actually have readers, lol.

  12. ClockworkZero

    @StupidInventor
oh yeah, I chuckled at the Proud-Parents. snort. I won’t wonder at the mechanics of how *that* happened.

Just saw the new comic :D yay! readers are good.

  13. berickcook

@ClockworkZero I’m glad your co-workers got you into making your jewelry. Those are some incredible pieces! You’ll be having another customer here come next paycheck :)

@stupidinventor Those binary watches are awesome! I love the Tokyo Flash ones too. I’d have one, but my auto-winding skeleton watch is just too mech-tastic to let go of :D

I do have a color pattern clock on my wall. I love having people try to figure out what it is and/or what time it is! It’s one of those clocks that would look right at home on a b-movie set.

    Looking forward to the 6-parter!

  14. stupidinventor

@ClockworkZero ha, glad you liked it! I got the thomas transformer as a chanukah present and realized I had the Thomas train and Optimus figure laying around my desk and just HAD to take a picture… :) They look like such a cute family, no?
    Readers are awesome!

@berickcook yeah I have a tokyo flash knock-off watch too, but my favorite is my skeleton…

Cool clock! I’ve never seen one of those, I wish I had the money to get one, lol.
And actually it looks too nice for a B-Movie, (even though I love B-movies.. :) )

Thanks! The first part starts on Monday!

  15. moniBologna

That is something i would do….. no wonder i dont have a boyfriend lol

  16. stupidinventor

lol, this is something I’ve actually done, i’m glad there are people out there that get it at least… (all i get is weird looks in real life…had to stop wearing the watch…)

  17. moniBologna

even though i am not entirely into the comic world, i would totally laugh and understand. People just dont have the playful sense of humor that we have =) LOL

srry, g2g… it’s CLOBBERIN TIME! hahahahahahahha

  18. stupidinventor

@moniBologna yeah, i know little bit about comics, but im not a super fan… i dont go to the comic book store every wed, but I do buy those 3 comics for $1 packs at the dollar store when im in the mood, lol.

actually I have a tshirt with The Thing and it says “You Rock!” so I have an abundance of corny comic clothing puns…

  19. moniBologna

lol thats awesome. Those shirts are really cool. I have a shirt that has a giant mushroom (from mario) on it with an giant X over it and the top says.. “i dont wanna grow up”

    lol i love nintendo

  20. stupidinventor

@moniBologna awesome shirt! I have a ton of nintendo/mario stuff!
I have a sweatshirt of Mario wearing a raccoon suit, and the sweatshirt actually has little ears on the hood, lol

  21. moniBologna

    awwww thats awesome! =)

    i want that! lol

  22. stupidinventor

@moniBologna yeah its my favorite sweatshirt, lol

    Mario Hoodie
(this is taken from the hot topic website, btw, lol)

  23. moniBologna

    that is awesome!

lol i figured it was a professional photo cuz i doubt someone would go out and get a professional photo taken just to post a comment….. actually, in todays world that does not seem so crazy.

  24. stupidinventor

@moniBologna yeah its my favorite hoodie, :)
I wish I knew how to take professional photos in the first place, lol. (and professional drawing, directing, etc.)

  25. moniBologna

lol me too! =) i guess thats why im in school

  26. stupidinventor

    @moniBologna Coolio! I should take some art/photography/film classes… oh well :(

  27. moniBologna

    Why dont you?!?!?! =)

  28. stupidinventor

@moniBologna engineering classes take most of my time,
cant study film when you need to master Laplace Transforms and Differential Equations… :(

  29. moniBologna

    =(

    oh well,

ya know, i was considering going into engineering or law before film.

I am actually looking for another degree so i can have a second one.

i definitely know i am going to do a 3 yr masters in architecture which lets you have any Undergraduate degree you want .. hence the three years.

BUT if i dont choose a second major or a minor… i will graduate next year (which has only been 3 yrs) and my scholarship is is offering me a 4th year so i need to choose another one fast.

  30. stupidinventor

@moniBologna Oh thats cool, buy why spend a 4th year? why not start the 3 year architecture program? either way, lol. not sure if I want to get a masters after I graduate…

  31. moniBologna

i want to do a fourth year because a fourth year is equivalent to a second degree and since my scholarship will pay for it… i feel its smart to take it. =)
Rather than go back to school and pay out of pocket i’ll get a second degree for the cost of volunteer hours lol.

Depending on my financial status i dunno if i CAN go back to get my masters. My job is fine but i dunno exactly how much it’ll cost.
    =)

  32. stupidinventor

@moniBologna oh, so in that case, it makes sense!
Sorry for the late response… busy week at school, :(

  33. moni_Bologna

see now you gets me =)

Lol no prob about the late response, i TOTALLY understand busy weeks. i’m actually having one… well, i have more of a busy life =) but it keeps me out of trouble *hee hee*

are you doin midterm prep or what

  34. stupidinventor

@moniBologna i don’t normally have a busy life, which is why i spend time making comics and stupid inventions… :)

midterms are in mid-march, just a bunch of lab reports and homework piled up and was due last week, plus i’m working on a top secret comic project! :)

  35. moni_Bologna

    oooooooooooooooooooooooooo

    top secret?!?

    hmmmmm….. heehee i wanna know =)

    lol

or maybe i can wait until you post something about it =)

  36. stupidinventor

@moniBologna I’m working on a weekly comic for the local paper. If it happens it should start in April, and would also be online so I’ll post the link.

  37. moniBologna

    oooooooooo fun times =) =)

so…. what made you start doin a comic strip?

  38. stupidinventor

    @moni_Bologna yeah, im very excited!
Always wanted to have my own syndicated comic strip, but its almost impossible to get one… so I just decided to start my own webcomic, mostly to entertain myself.

When I reach 100 I’ll probably print them in a photobook, just for myself, lol

  39. moniBologna

    good idea,

in film class we ALWAYS discuss how printed media is dying. So the internet is the way to go. =)

    • stupidinventor

True, but hopefully syndicated comic strips will still remain in some form, even if it’s only online… don’t know what I would do without them!

      • moniBologna

lol i like buying books and books of comics. Not super hero but i like the peanuts and calvin and hobbes and other funny ones

        • stupidinventor

Me too, might I suggest getting The Comics, it goes through newspapers comics from the 1900′s until about 2002, it’s one of my favorite books I’ve ever bought, I just finished reading it.

          http://www.borders.com/online/store/TitleDetail?sku=0681037865
Do a google search to see if there are any coupon codes for the site.

          • moniBologna

            OOOOO YAY!! =)

I will buy this in the next couple days. I get borders rewards so maybe i can get some money off of it :D

            • stupidinventor

              I think there’s a 30% off coupon… let me look

              yeah:
Coupon code for 30% off online at Borders: BSG7295Q

              • moniBologna

                oooooooo thanks so much! :D

it sounds like an awesome collection

                • stupidinventor

                  No problem!
It really is, I just wish it had even more comics, lol.
(it has a ton, but since its going through 100 years of history, it only has a few pages of each comic…)
                  Still it’s an awesome book!

                  • moniBologna

i bought a calvin and hobbes book with it :P

                    • stupidinventor

I have a bunch of calvin and hobbes, and far side collections from when I was in elementary school from Scholastic Book Order, lol

Now I’m hoping to one day buy the Complete Calvin and Hobbes and Far Side collections… when I have a full time job and a house to fit all these dvds and books in, lol

  40. moniBologna

OMG my dad LOVES far side .. me too of course. I work full time but i just need to ge paid more and i can afford all teh dvds and book i want :D

I am sooooo excited for my books. I remember always seeing “the comics” in the borders store when i would visit but i was always on a budget. :(

    • stupidinventor

Lol, yeah it’s a steal now at only $20

I need to get paid more too! I’m going to be paid for the new strip I’m working on, but not that much :(

Actually the Far Side Anniversary Book is what made me think I could be a cartoonist. After reading how Gary Larson became a syndicated comic strip it made it seem so attainable… Before then I though it was impossible, now I think it’s only very improbable…

      • moniBologna

        that’s awesome!! :D

I’m glad you’re going to comtinue your strip because it think it is soooooo awesome!

Do you take any classes for drawing or comedy acting?

        • stupidinventor

Thanks! This summer I want to take my favorite strips and prepare a proposal and send them to some syndicates… I don’t think it would be accepted, (Syndicated get about 3,000 submissions a year, of which they choose like 2) but I figured I might as well try!

I’ve never taken a drawing or acting class in my life (and I think it shows, lol)

          • moniBologna

lol i like your style of drawing, i can tell ou are getting better.

The women you draw have gotten better thats for sure :D

I think you would benefit from a community college drawing class, this way you learn perspective.

I love drawing so i know the different techniques.

At the same time i dont kno if i exactly agree in you taking a drawing class considering the style is awkwardly cute and fits your characters personality.

            • stupidinventor

Thanks! Ha, I was going to say that actually, that the girls are coming out better, lol.

Maybe next semester If I can squeeze i’ll try to squeeze in a drawing class, I really know nothing… ha, I like that, “awkwardly cute”..

You’ll see in the new strip I’m working on, I spend more time on the drawing of that one, plus it’s in color so it looks better…

              • moniBologna

                omg Color?? ooooo

                hmmmmm I can’t wait :)

I’ve noticed you have been using a lot of different shades. for your back drops. its nice. It makes your comic look mroe clean cut. :D

                • stupidinventor

Yup, it’s a completely new strip about the Staten Island Ferry, the editor told me they’ll probably be posting it online, so I’ll post links to it.

I’ve been doing it in color, and I’ve also been trying to be more visual with some of the jokes…It’s a challenge because of my limited drawing ability, but it’s been fun nonetheless…

Thanks, I think it makes it look nicer, but I really should be learning how to make it look more clean cut using only black and white, if I want to be a syndicated comic strip cartoonist…

I just got this book, and I’m reading it to hopefully gain a little more knowledge about the industry: http://www.amazon.com/Your-Career-Comics-Lee-Nordling/dp/0836207483

                  • Monique Iniguez

                    LOOKS LIKE AN AWESOME BOOK!

                    :D

I am so excited for your future. If you ever need help on marketing or distribution let me know since its up my alley considering i have to know it for film. :D

I cant wait to see the color versions. :D

                    • stupidinventor

Yeah it’s great so far because it’s not just one cartoonist’s opinion, he interviewed a bunch of cartoonists, editors, and syndicate employees and got their views on lots of different aspects of the industry.
                      :)

  41. Moni Bologna

OH MY GOSH that book will be so useful to you!
    :D

BTW my comics book came as well as my calvin and hobbes :)

    • stupidinventor

      Yeah, it’s already been helpful…
I’m going to see what happens once my strip starts in my local paper, and in the summer I’m going to send a submission of my best Stupid Inventor strips (may have redraw them) to the syndicates…

    • Moni Bologna

thats cool. Wel if you need help or suggestions on anything let me know. :)

      • stupidinventor

        ok, thanks! :)

        • Moni Bologna

yeah and since i have a site now (for my film and design career which is under construction)

I’ll post a link to your site. :)

          • stupidinventor

            Coolio!
Thanks, let me know when it’s up and running!
