Comic #65 – The Automatic Doorknob

Seriously why do stores do this?
I’ve seen some stores have only the entrance door be automatic, and visa versa… it really bugs me… I’m hoping someone has a logical explanation for this, but I can’t imagine what it might be.

Maybe, so that people have low “entry” barriers and high “exit” barriers which will help in increasing sales :)

Can you explain what you mean by that?

      • harpocrates23

he means easy to come in and shop…hard to get out so might as well shop more

        • stupidinventor

that’s what I thought he meant, but does anyone really look at the door, decide that they are too lazy to push it, then shop some more to delay that pushing? lol, i’m lazy, but im not that lazy…

……. i TOTALLY look at the door. Heh i may even have an employee open it for me…. You expect me to open such a door? HA! in your dreams!

            :)

Ahhhh sarcasm does not feel the same in text.

OMG! i love this comic! There is a video that you will like and i’ll try to find it.

BTW i think the reason is because of people who steal. It is easier to slow someone down if you dont open the door for them.

    • stupidinventor

      Ok, thanks!

Hmm, good point, but I don’t think the automatic doors open that fast, you can’t run through them…

Well, some stores that sell big things have an automatic exit door for convenience, but don’t spring for the automatic entrance. The other way? Who knows?

    • stupidinventor

The stores that made me write the comic had both doors of equal size, just one was automatic. I just don’t get why they dont spring for both being automatic…

I think they make the exit automatic since you’re holding packages at that point.

And maybe the make the entrance automatic so that when you’re walking by, the door opens and you feel guilty so you go in. :D

Ok..you are an engineer so you should know this one… :P

In case of an emergency like and earthquake or fire, power may shutdown rendering the automatic doors useless, you don’t want a panicked crowed crashing into automatic doors trying to escape.

You need a manual door. Also the national building code states that sliding and revolving doors cannot be considered emergency exits generally : http://goo.gl/c02S

    • stupidinventor

Lol, I’m an electrical engineer (well, almost) they haven’t taught us any building codes.

I appreciate the research. But the book says that some automatic doors can be allowed. I know the cheap automatic doors that I was thinking of (the ones that swing out rather than slide open) can be used as regular doors when the power is out or the motor stops working.

Still that probably has a lot to do with it.

While we’re on the subject though, my school has a one door that can be used as an automatic door if you press the handicapped button.
Now, I realize that handicapped people need and deserve an automatic door but if they are already putting in the tech, why not just make it automatic for everyone? (I probably should have made the strip about this, because it bothers me more, lol )

      • harpocrates23

Well the electrical engineer part of you would have realised that without power there would be no automatic door. I

It does say that they may be allowed but they have to be made a certain way in order to do that and one of them is to have a manual release in case of emergency and most business dont like placing buttons and manual releases where the public would just randomly press them (especially since often these manual release buttons are also connected to fire alarm control panels which would also notify the fire department).

Easy solution, place a manual exit.

As for the automatic door for handicapped…it also requires power…

So as far as emergency exits are concenred the KISS principle you might have learned studying engineering applies…Keep It Simple Stupid. ;)

Hope that helps clear your thoughts and you don’t have to worry about it anymore.

P.S. As for me knowing building code and national fire code…lots of the systems I test (gas, smoke, fire detectors, fire alarm control panels etc) all have to comply with NFPA (National Fire Protection Association) and other National codes (NEC – National Electric Code, building codes etc). They are boring as hell to read but does give you an understanding about subjects such as this :) . Another national building code “fun” fact – ALL exits must open outwards so as to not cause people getting stuck at doors in case of an emergency. Not all places comply..but most do. Check it out :)

For some reason I wasnt emailed about this one…
& i agree that its probably for safety reasons

    • stupidinventor

I think I fixed the problem, let me know if you’re getting emails now…

Your first cross-over comic! Dave somehow escaped the ferry and made his way here.

    • stupidinventor

lol, more like I made this comic on a deadline, and decided to “recycle”…
Although it would be cool to see the Stupid Inventor take a ferry ride, maybe in the future…
