Comic #77 – Captain Flash

Seriously, they are totally different!

Another comic based on my real nerdy life… I even took a picture!

And here I thought one of them was a Jolt Cola shirt….

BTW, your controls are in very bad tab order, made all the worse by hiding link highlighting.

    • stupidinventor

Hahahaha, just googled it, now I want a Jolt Cola shirt too to complete the collection… :D

I just feel bad for Captain Marvel, because everytime I wear the shirt, people think it’s the flash….

hmm, I’m new to the whole website thing, care to explain what you mean by that and how I can fix it?

What I mean is, when the focus is on some control, and you hit tab, focus should go to the control that the user most likely expects it to. This is what some folks call “the principle of least surprise”, useful in all sorts of human interfaces, be it user interfaces like a web site or programming interfaces like an API. For example, if I’ve just put in my name, and hit tab, it should go to the box to enter my email address. And from there, to the one for my website, and then the comment.

After that, tab should logically take me to maybe the “subscribe to comments” checkbox (or whatever it’s called, since I have already commented, the site doesn’t show me that any more), or straight to the “Submit Comment” button. But no, it takes me up to the top of the page somewhere. And where? I don’t know, because it isn’t highlighted! Whatever it is, is a link to the previous comic, as I can see in the status bar at the bottom of my browser. I’m guessing it’s the button at the top right. If I press tab again, it still doesn’t *show* me what’s highlighted, but from the sequence in the status bar, it looks like it’s the row of buttons at the top left. If I were a typical ‘net user, I’d have no clue what happened; I’d need to scroll back down, take my hands off the keyboard (another UI design principle: don’t make people switch back and forth between multiple interfaces), and use the mouse to click on Submit Comment.

Now, how to fix it: I don’t know. Probably something configurable in your WordPress template or something like that, and I don’t know WordPress templates.

Oh, I had no idea that was an issue!

I’m not a big user of the Tab button…. in fact the first thing I think of when I hear the word Tab is the “I can’t open up a Tab for you until you order something kid!” line from Back to the Future… :D

I’m going to look into the forums and stuff and see if I can fix the problem. Thanks for bringing it to my attention!

      :D

You’re welcome. Some of us “old-sk00l” types prefer to keep our hands on our keyboards where God intended them to be. ;-)

Hey, I hear you. I prefer my old trackball mouse to an optical… I think a person loves the tech that he started out with…

But I love whipping out the ALT + TAB every once in a while to impress my non-computer nerd friends, lol.

          :D

I haven’t figured out the TAB problem yet, but I posted a message on a WordPress forum.

    so effin’ cute

      lol thanks

[Aronson, u r 2 funny!] But seriously, Zach, he’s right. Only we called it *intuitive* user interface. I have arthritus and haven’t used a mouse in 8-10 years. If you care about accessability issues, you will study up on the latest. Proper TAB order makes a big difference and you only need to set it up once. Now, as to how…it may be up to the folks that set up your web page. Keep up the good work. ~bailly

      Thanks!

I had no idea it was even an issue, so if you ever see any other issues, let me know and I’ll do my best to fix it.

    It has colors!!!!!! >:O

    Cool shirts btw

    • stupidinventor

Yes, I thought it would make the comic funnier, but I prefer to work in greyscale for practice in case I ever become a newspaper cartoonist…. :D

  6. Ravenheart

ahaha lol! I love how the pet goes “nerd”!

    • stupidinventor

      Lol, thanks!

Everytime I try to explain to someone that my Captain Marvel t-shirt is not The Flash but Captain Marvel, they all give me the same “What a Nerd!” look… :D

  7. Nate

Have you ever tried explaining the fact that Captain Marvel (at least the one with the lighting bolt) is actually owned by DC? Talk about confusing. And then having to explain the fact that there were i think 5 Captain Marvels (at least)? The other 4 were owned by Marvel. Not to mention the last one created by Marvel was a black female with a fro?

Captain Marvel just wants to be confusing and mistaken as other people…DC even acquired the rights to Captain Marvel by sueing Fawcett Comics for copy rights infringement because Captain Marvel was basically a Superman clone with a different suit.

And though i know all of this… i didnt know that he had had a show on CBS in the 70′s. What can i say? you learn something new everyday.

-from a fellow nerd, live long and prosper.

    • stupidinventor

HA, I have tried explaining, but as soon as I start the person asks “What’s the difference between Marvel and DC?” and then they give me this blank stare when I try to explain the whole story…

I did not know there were 4 Marvel Captain Marvels, I’m surprised by how little I know of Marvel, much more of a DC fan.

Well, DC sued Fawcett, making them go out of business, but it wasn’t until like 20 years later that they acquired the rights to Captain Marvel, in the meantime Marvel Comics became Marvel and created their own Captain Marvel (although Major Marvel sounds better and much more up Stan Lee’s alley)…

When Captain Marvel first came out he was more popular than Superman!

I would love to get my hands on a reprint collection of the Fawcett Captain Marvel stories (that and Plastic Man), but the only collection I could find is out of print and expensive…. oh well…

Thanks! You too! hope you like the comic!
