This comic is especially funny to me because it’s almost a word for word copy of an actual conversation I had with my little brother… am I the only one who counts the slices?

To be fair, you need only a second loaf to solve this problem (assuming they’re both odd). As long as you can prevent a single slice from going stale, you can tie loaves together. The only risk would be having an odd loaf and then only even loaves after that…but what are the chances of that?
Well, the probability of a given number of loaves (call it x), assuming a 50/50 chance of odd/even is 1/(2^x), so the expected number of loaves is 3.5. Half the time, a single loaf will do it. The other half the time…well, half the half the time a second loaf will do it. The other quarter of the time…

Although you are right, what I meant is that if you just randomly take slices from the middle then you end up with two end slices that don’t match. Even if you took a slice from a different loaf it still wouldn’t match up exactly, you know? And I hate it when that happens… it drives me crazy when the two slices aren’t symmetrical! I’m sorry I wasn’t clear enough in the comic, it’s hard trying to explain something in just three panels…

I usually make my sandwiches 1/2 a sandwich at a time, and eat them over the kitchen sink. One sandwich is rarely enough, and making them in one slice/0.5 sandwich increments is easy & keeps me from making too much. Besides, it lets me have a variety in one meal.

That creates the same problem for me. I can’t stand eating a sandwich and having the slices be uneven, lol.
I know it’s crazy, but that’s just how I eat.
I take a gamble and if at the end there is an odd slice I fold it in half and have a half sandwhich.
Not to mention if I had designed the system (bread slicer) I would ensure that the number of cuts always resulted in an even amount of slices so as to not have a “lone” slice left. Doesnt that make sense?
lol, I’ve done the “half sandwich” as well, but it’s not the same…
I don’t think the problem is the slicer, I know at my local deli the slicer is made much wider so i can slice any size loaf, I think it’s the bakers who need to make the loaves a standard size in order to ensure even slice distribution…
(One of my favorite parts about this webcomic is having conversations like this…lol)
thats why engineers develop Standards. You need to cply with a standard of length both for the slicer and the length of the load and be consistent…
Maybe that’s why engineers can’t bake?
